The Derby at Epsom is renowned worldwide as one of racing’s greatest spectacles. First run in 1780, it is known as the Blue Riband of the Turf and is arguably the most coveted prize in the sport.
Derby Day offers an unforgettable experience each year. Set on the Downs, Epsom racecourse is considered the ultimate test for three-year-old Thoroughbreds. Runners need a combination of speed, stamina, and balance to navigate the unique undulations of the horseshoe-shaped course.
This is where legends are made – from Lester Piggott’s unmatched nine wins to Vincent O’Brien’s brilliant training feats, and the elegance of great winners like Workforce, Sea-Bird, Nijinsky, and Mill Reef.
The event attracts a diverse crowd of over 100,000 people, including royalty and celebrities in traditional morning suits and stunning dresses, as well as gypsies handing out good-luck charms. You can enjoy fairground attractions, live music, and open-top bus parties.
In addition to the Derby, there is the Oaks – the fillies’ equivalent on the opening day of the meeting. Day one also features the Coronation Cup, a Group 1 race for older horses over the Derby/Oaks course.
